Right to Education

Right to Education Bill is highly laudable. Democracy without education has no meaning as the illiterate population would be under the influence of their political masters who are interested to come to power only to attain selfish goals.

There is a high rate of illiterate population in India. This is due to the fact that facilities for education is lacking in the countryside. Schools are situated in distant places and poor parents do not send their children to schools to avoid transport cost. There is very high drop out in the middle as the poor children are compelled to work as domestic servants and daily wage earners by their parents to supplement their income. Necessary steps are to be taken to stop this tendency by giving financial help to the needy.

It is observed that certain teachers do not treat the children alike. They have likes and dislikes. They are partial and give preferential treatment to some while treating children from backward communities as untouchables. Students in such schools hate attending regular classes. These teachers should be made aware of their responsibilities and should be sensitive and treat everyone in equal footing.

Our system of education is mainly examination oriented. Annual examinations are conducted based on bookish knowledge. This system does not give any chance to develop qualities for independent thoughts. Regular grading instead of annual examinations would be the best way for self development. This will result in better understanding among students, avoid frustration and drop outs in the middle of the academic session.

Education should not be a monopoly of the rich. All deserving candidates should be given opportunity even in higher level giving them the required financial aid.
