What to See in Ooty
However, tranquility and a pleasant atmosphere for mental relaxation and stunning views of the green surroundings are not the only things to do in this picturesque valley. There are plenty of places to visit in Ooty, each unique its own way.
1. The Botanical Garden, which is maintained by the horticulture department of the state government, is the home to different varieties of ornamental and exotic plants. Vibrant petals of roses, shrubs, and multiple species of eucalyptus and ferns ornament the garden which is nice place for gentle walk in the morning and afternoon. The Botanical Garden hosts the Summer Festivals every year where visitors get great scopes for trekking.
2. The Government Museum on Mysore Road is another great spot to explore. It is a house where guests can get to see greatest specimens of crafts and sculptural arts of Tamil Nadu. Besides, there are lots of tribal objects to see and observe the ecological details of different districts of Tamil Nadu.
3. Mudumalai Wildlife Sanctuary, which is also known as the Tiger Reserve, is another highlight of Ooty tourism. The reserve is situated at a spectacular spot where the Eastern Ghats and Western Ghats meet. The sanctuary is spread over an area of 32,000 hectares and is wilderness area where 48 tigers, wild dogs, langurs, elephants, bonnet macaques and sloth bears reside. Visitors can also witness hyenas, spotted deer, mouse deer, leopard, wild boar, flying squirrels and different other creatures.
4. Another great laid back and tranquil spot is the Ooty Lake, an artificial water body built way back in the year 1824. The lake was formed by waters coming down from the mountain streams that flow down the valley of Ooty. The bank of the lake, with rows of eucalyptus trees is equally beautiful. The area also comprises a bus stand, a mini garden and race course. Facility for boating is available at the lake.
5. Another great attraction of Ooty is the Nilgiri Mountain Railway. Also recognized as ‘Nilgiri Toy Train’, the railway links Ooty with Mettupalyam at the bottom of Nilgiri. The Ooty toy train offers a wonderful journey through the woods and the valley. It’s a part of Ooty’s heritage and the vintage train with its cream and blue colored wooden coaches offer a great charm to the travelers. The train offers a 46 km journey and take four and half hours to reach the foot of Niligirs from Ooty. It stops at five stations-Kallar, Hill Grove, Adderlay Runnymede and Kateri.
