Zansam is a music band based in Bangalore. It is a band that I have had the fortune of being a part of, as a singer and percussionist. All the members of Zansam are either businessmen, students or working professionals who have come together out of their passion for music.

None of the Zansam members look at music as a source of income. The group meets every weekend jamming, practicing music and composing its own scores. Besides being a passion, Zansam also sees music as being a means of making a social difference and supporting causes that the group identifies with.

In September 2008, Zansam organized a concert in Bangalore, in aid of children of life convicts in Karnataka. The concert was a fund-raising event in aid of SOCARE-IND, a registered NGO that works for the cause of children who have lost one parent to murder and the other to life imprisonment. Most of these innocent children have been witness not only to the gruesome murder, but also to the police and legal proceedings following the act. Many come to SOCARE-IND in shock and need sustained psychiatric care. SOCARE-IND provides these children the medical care they need, contemporary education, shelter and food, and helps them return to mainstream society, shedding the stigma of a crime they did not commit.

The concert, titled Pancham - A musical tribute was a roaring success and Zansam contributed Rs 50,000 out of the concert collections to SOCARE-IND. The word spread by the band resulted in corporations like Yahoo! India coming forward to support the organization.

Taking the spirit of music for a cause forward, Zansam performed on 3 April 09, at the Sarla Birla Academy in Bangalore. The performance managed to generate a further Rs 25,000 for SOCARE-IND. Zansam has an online gallery of paintings for a cause. These paintings of musicians and actors are created by the band members. These paintings are offered for sale at a nominal price of Rs 500 each. The sale proceeds from the paintings are also donated to SOCARE-IND.

While the band is trying to support a worthy cause, Zansam also performs at corporate shows and music concerts organized by event management companies to sustain the group expenses. The band is simultaneously working on its own original compositions. Zansam contributes a percentage of all their fees towards the children of SOCARE-IND.
