13 B: Movie Review

Director: Vikram K Kumar
Cast: R Madhavan, Neetu Chandra
Rating: ***1/2

We have had enough of camera movements and loud background scores to create a spooky effect. Here’s a film that scares you through its story.

Manohar, an upwardly mobile middle class Indian moves into a new apartment - 13B on the 13th floor with his family. From the first day in their new home, the women are hooked on to a new TV show “Sab Khairiyat” (All’s Well). The show is about a family eerily similar to theirs who have also just moved into a new house. As the TV show unfolds, all the incidents that happen in the show start happening to Manohar and his family.

Initially, a number of happy events take place and a lot of good things happen, both in the show and with Manohar's family. Then things take a turn for the worse and shocking incidents start happening in the TV show... Will the same happen to Manohar and his family? Will Manohar be able to solve the mystery in time before it consumes him and his entire family?

There is this entire new approach to creating an eerie effect in a brilliant buildup in the 1st half. The second half is where the actual story unfolds and the suspense is handled in a truly intriguing manner.

When it comes to performances, R Madhavan is brilliant in the lead role. Due credits to debutant Director Vikram K Kumar for redefining the horror genre in Hindi cinema.

13B spooks you with its (serial) killer of an idea.
