Bountiful Polygamist Arrested in Canada

Whether Winston Blackmore and his 25 wives like it or not, Blackmore's day of reckoning is going to descend upon, and the last thing he will ever hear as a "free man," before he is sentenced to do time in prison, is the sound of judge's gavel after he passes sentencing. At least that's the way I'm hoping it plays out.

Blackmore, a man who was once buddy-buddy with former FLDS leader Warren Jeffs before a power struggle between the two men caused a rift between them that saw Blackmore excommunicated, has been arrested with what I think could be considered by many to be nothing more than a crime against morality, having more than one wife.

There is the possibility that further charges could be laid, depending where the three year investigation takes the RCMP, but I am pretty confident that Blackmore, like Jeffs, is going to suffer some heavy consequences for his actions. I can't imagine life being very good for Blackmore from this point on.

For all anybody knows Blackmore could be cut from the same cloth as Jeffs, a man who before he was sentenced to life in prison, was one of America's most wanted. It seems Jeff had an affinity for young girls and the services they could provide for other men in his sect.

The RCMP continue to investigate whether or not Blackmore is, or was, sexually exploiting young girls for his, or somebody else's pleasure before they arrested him.

Another Bountiful polygamist, James Oler, who only had two wives compared to Blackmore’s twenty-five, was also arrested.

The arrests of Blackmore and Oler could be the start of something big.

Legal analysts are of the opinion that B.C. Attorney General Wally Oppal is going to have a tough go of prosecuting this case. That the case is a “legal minefield,” as one legal analyst (Steve Skurka-CTV) put it. But whether or not this case turns out to be a legal minefield or not, I don't believe for one second that Blackmore, whose off-shoot sect of the Fundamentalist Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints (FLDS) has between 800 and 1000 followers, is going to be able to avoid prison. You know what they say, "where there's smoke there is fire," and while the polygamy charges might not stick, I have a feeling that other charges will arise from the investigation that began in 2005.

Having said that; I don't believe for one second that Blackmore is any better of a person than his former colleague Warren Jeffs, and karma is about to catch up with somebody that as far as I'm concerned is no better than slave owners, and dare I say human traffickers, albeit one who uses religion to justify his actions.

Maybe I'm wrong about the guy, but until I know any better, I am going to assume that Winston Blackmore is no better than Warren Jeffs; though it is entirely possible he isn't quite as vile and cruel.
