A movie by Vasanth Kumar Shivashankar Padukone .........Can you guess
Cinema is truly a creative work. It can include all the unimaginable thinks and convey it to the common way.
Last week I watched one of the classics in Hindi Cinema. The name of the movie is "Pyaasa". There are lots of things said before and will be said in future regarding this breathtaking film. I think most of you would know about the story. But i will summarize the story in few words.
The story of Pyaasa is about a individual who wants his art to be published and recognised. It is about a young writer who writes poems ( ghazals ) which relates to the day to day happenings in life of a common man. While he is studying he falls in love with a girl. He is very happy to find his love in this life. It is said that "Fate has its own story" and the girl leaves him. The poet is heartbroken and he puts his feelings on the paper. The family also deserts him as he is not employed and do see know future in him as a poet. Only his mother cares about his son.
In the middle of this the poet’s work comes in the hands of a prostitute who instantly falls in love of them. Fate always has its own way, the poet and his first love come again and meet. This doesn’t go well with the man( who is publisher) with whom the girl is married.
One day the world comes to know that the poet is dead due to a train accident. The publisher makes money after publishing the works of the poet.
One fine day the poet comes back and introduces himself but nobody wants to recognize, his brothers, relatives and friends. They do not want to loose their share of money coming from his works. The poet sees all this and decides to go far away from this hypocritical life.
Artists and Technicians:
First of all lots of accolades to the makers of the film. The film was made in the year 1957 but was way ahead of its time. The most important thing in the film was the story. It was spell bounding and heart wrenching. It showed the ugly part of our society where a man/woman’s work is not recognized until it is profitable to the society.
The film boasts a wonderful cast including Guru Dutt, Mala Sinha , Waheeda Rehman, Johnny Walker, Rehman and more. Rehman as a owner of the publishing house is rich, powerful man, who thinks in every sense profit. He does not take care about emotions in life. It is tailor maid film for the actor who eases in to the role. And there is ‘Sataar Bhai’ played by comic genius ‘Johnny Walker’. The song ‘Sar jo tera chakaraye, ya dil dooba haye…..” is a song that will be remembered for centuries to come and a major part of this goes to the actor. It is his acting skills which takes the song to a next level.
There is Mala Sinha who plays the lover. She is beautiful, natural and has delivered to more than expected by the director. We have ‘Waheeda Rehman’ who is epitome of beauty with a intoxicating smile. The song ‘Jaane kya tune kahi’ rendered by Geeta Dutt is wonderfully filmed on the actress. The pose with which she carries along the film can be done by a caliber person only.
The actor or hero of the film i.e Guru Dutt is the heart.brain.soul of the film. He is also the producer and director of the film. There are very few persons who have made their presence in many fields of the film. If any man who has given justice to all the fronts is none other than Dutt sahab. The role of a struggling poet who has no existence in this society, who has no place of shelter, food, care, love and many more fundamental things to lead a normal life.
I want to highlight one scene in the film which has touched me a lot, is the scene of filming the song “ ‘ Jaane who kaise log ko jink pyar ko pyar mila………”. The song is picturised in a large hall with people hearing the song. One scene where the hero stands with both his hands stretched along a shelf (bookshelf) is brilliant. Different people can interpret this scene according to their perspective of view. I think it as if he wants to embrace the love and is looking for the warmth and affection of people.
I need to mention here one important part of the film i.e Music and Lyrics. The Lyrics is by Sahir Ludhianvi and music by S D Burman. The most important aspect of the film to be a huge success goes to this 2 pillars. My favorite song is “ Jine naaz hain hin par who kahan hain, kahan hain, kahan hain………” . This song makes you to jump and sit straight to hear the voice within us. It is beautifully composed by Senior Burman Sahab and sung by the legend Mohamed Rafi.
All the other songs are also make it to the top ten list of all time. It feels really good to know that we are living in this age, where we can enjoy the work of greatest artists in Hindi Cinema. It should really inspire the young turks to think and pen down lyrics or stories which can inspire a common man.
I highly recommend to watch this film to know the true essence of life.
And last, Mr.Vasanth Kumar Shivashankar Padukone is the Hero/Director/Producer of our film.
