Old is Gold- Movie Review

Hi All,

It's being a long time to have blogged related to movies.

One of my favorite film is "GUIDE". When you here this name then different things come into my mind. Firstly the hero- heroine - Devanand and Waheeda Rehaman, the music and songs, and story.

I believe when this film was made (year 1965) it was way ahead of the time. The film was based on the novel by "R.K Narayan". I have not read the novel but i can say that the director of the film Vijay Anand has made complete justice to the novel.

As most of you know the plot of the film, the main highlights of the story are;

1.How a woman who has talent(dancing) face the society inhibitions and reach new heights.

2.How a man understands the talent and nurtures it in the woman.

3.How different people react to the situation.

4.How a man loses his ground whenever he gets instant fame and money.

5.How a man gets treated by people when they actually do not his past.

6.At last How a man believes that there is someone who is watching everyone.

One of the main highlight of the film is the music.The music is composed by Sachin Dev Burman. The songs are rendered by soulful voice of Lata Mangeshkar, Kishore Kumar, Mohamed Rafi and SD Burman.

The lyrics of the songs are very common and easily sink to our souls. My fav song "Kya se Kya Hogaya, Bewafa Tere Pyar Mein...". You can see Mohd Rafi singing to his soul and convey the meaning.

This blog will not completed if i do not say about the actors. The casting of the film is perfect. Anwar Hussain as Gaffor, Ulhas as Mamaji, Leela Chitnis as Raju's Mother, Kishore Sahu as Marco are excellent in their short roles. The dialogues also play important in portraying thir roles. Waheda Rehaman as Miss Nalini is simply outstanding. The film starts and we find as she is confined to the four walls of a house, no breathing space, coming from a courtesan famliy. In between the film,she is totally like a girl of 8 years. She sings to have a life where she is free to have her say with no interferences. She dances like a damsel with all the grace. Special mention to camera work to capture the minute details of the experessions.

The hero Dev Anand as Raju guide. I do not remeber no character in any films portraying the role of a guide with so much passion. He is the soul of the film. As usual in his unique get up, he takes his role with so much ease and is difficult to realise "Is this Acting or anything Real happening". In the second half of the film he plays a Saint character where the people of a village think as he is a holy man who has come to relieve then with all their difficulties.

One scene which comes to my mind is that a journalist asks him whether he truly believes that his fast would bring rain, he smiles and says "These people have faith in me, and I have faith in their faith".

So if until now if you have not seen this epic movie then you have lost a something and i can assure you if you watch it then you will definitely say that "Cinema can Achieve Anything".

Thanks and Regards
