Actor Par Excellence
I happened to watch a Tamil Movie called "Anbe Sivam" where Kamal Hassan plays the lead role supported by Madhavan. The story line is about a rebel leader who fights for workers rights. The leader accidentally falls in love with the daughter of his owner. They try to elope when a bus accident separates both of them. Nallasivam, that is the name of the rebel hero gets admitted in a missionary hospital where he is attended by a Mother superior who nurses him through out his recuperation. The Hero then becomes incapacitated walking through heavy limping, becomes bespectacled and also with scars on his face. This is the flash back story for the story begins with a train accident when the Hero happens to meet Madhavan, a charming young man who initially detests Nallasivan for his overbearing nature. Nalla Sivan believes that God is omnipresent- and manifests himself in various forms . During the accident, Nallasivan happens to meet the Mother superior who nursed him in a relief camp set up by a missionary. He donates blood and compels Madhavan also to do so much aganst his wishes. But Madhavan realises that his blood donation was to help a young boy gain his life.
Madhavan realises the greatness of Nallasivan when he goes to handover some cheque for workers which he had collected after a prolonged battle. He lands up in a local communist party office where people were hopefully waiting for the money. He understands the self less work of Nallasivam and adopts him as his brother inviting him to attend his marriage. The marriage of Madhavan is with the hero's erstwhile Lover. Nallasivan is spotted by the father of the bride who wants him to clear the place. Because when after the accident Nallasivan went to meet his lover, he was told that she is already married with children. Nallasivan agrees to go away provided the owner agrees for signing a wage agreement with the workers. Even while sacrificing his own love, Nallasivan fights for workers rights.
Through out the film Kamal Hassan lives as the rebel leader. I never felt I was watching a Cinema,It was all real. Kamal exemplified what probably Ho Chi Minh or may be Vladimir Ionovich Lenin could have done in their life time. The dialogues, the Song " Yar Yar sivam" all contributed to the theme of the movie in a grandilouent style. I have believed Kamal to be an actor par excellence in the august Company of such greats as Marlon Brando, Gregory Peck, Our own Nana Patekar, Mammotty, Mohan Lal and the legendary Shivaji Ganesan. Kamal breathes Cinema in every moment of his life. He knows everything about cinema and has done very remarkable roles through out his carrer from chappani in Padhinary Vayadhinele, Velu Naicker in Nayagan, Satya in Satya, and so many other roles. It is unfortunate that he did not get recognition which he richly deserves. Even an Oscar could fall short.
