Time travel – what a waste of time!
Time travel would be such a great thing, wouldn’t it? We could always travel back in time and set any wrongs right. We could change the course of events for the better at any time. We could undo wars, injustices etc so that it would be as if they had never happened!
On the face of it – yes. I mean – imagine being able to set past wrongs right, to undo events which have risen from faulty decisions, to undo crippling accidents and set right all manner of things.
Then we think some more. What if we understand after ten years that a certain decision has lead us to a bad situation and we think “if only I had taken the other route and not this one”. So we go back and undo that one action. Obviously when you do that all the subsequent related events are whipped out in that instant.
So now we want to go back to the future to the point we had left it - to that point where only this particular part had been ‘wrong’. When we reach there (will that point in time even exist at all now?) we will see that the new ‘now’ is very different from the one we left from – events and decisions which apparently we ourselves had taken on the altered route. When we become acquainted with these would they all be ‘right’? Would the ten years we started off setting right have followed the same course in the things that were already ‘right’ with our lives or would the difference in events and thus situations have lead to changes in other decisions and actions? Logic says that our actions, always dictated by many factors in the relevant time frame, can not be the same when the other factors at the time are different. And human nature being what it is, there is every chance that at least one of those actions or decisions would be ‘wrong’.
So what do we do now? Go back to the time that that particular ‘wrong’ was committed? Set that right and start the whole cycle again? And again? And again?
A waste of time, don’t you think?
