Leadership Tips from A CEO!
Recently I met the CEO of a fairly large organization. Being a good listener – developed this habit with great difficulties – I gave him a patient hearing regarding his future plans: How he's planning to make the company highly profitable etc -- despite a stiff competition from the bigger players.
In a few minutes I got impressed! Not because he speaks well but, he appeared to be highly intelligent and in total control over his communication process. So, I decided to probe further and initiated a general discussion on his strategic initiatives.
Well, he opened up, and we had an interesting brain-storming session lasting for more than an hour – although my appointment was for 30 minutes only.
We discussed, at length, about some of the critical leadership qualities essential for achieving success in difficult environment.
Let's look at what he said:
According to him, you can taste success even in a difficult situation if you remain focused on the following tasks -- continuously, and consistently!
Get involved in everything that matter: Success is like a chain with links that matter; ignoring even one link may lead to breaking the continuity . So Identify those important links - talent, process, strategy, technology etc - and do your best to maintain them.
Improve knowledge base: For helping the poor you have to be rich; similarly, for guiding your team members you must have a strong and better knowledge base.
Eliminate fear of failure: Always remember that the war is not won in the battle field, but in thoughts.
Improve confidence level: Nothing can be achieved unless you, yourself, are convinced that you can achieve it.
Build-up a good team: Everything said above is useless unless you've a self-motivated team to support you. So, the first thing you need to do, in a leadership role, is to assess the capabilities of your current team members and refine the team according to your requirements: Either through training and development, or through replacement by better talents from relevant organization
It was a good learning experience, and one of the best meetings I attended in recent time.
