Go Green

While coming to office in Bangalore in the morning nowadays we can find a cycling group wearing “Go Green “ T-shirt and cycling around the city.

On the other hand government of India refused to sign a treaty for putting upper limit on emission of Green House Gases(GHG) by a country, giving reason that in India infrastructural growth and removing poverty is more important than this issue and it is developed countries who are major contributor in GHG emission rather than developing country. A very correct reasoning.

Lets once again go back to the cycling initiative, if we look around the city and take a look at number of commuters by bus and other public transport user I guess they all have enough money to buy one bicycle, then why they don’t?

Most of these people belongs to middle class background and many of them have come from small town of India to Bangalore with one dream to remove that label of middle class and almost all them have dream of having their own car rather than bicycle.

Of course most of them have rode bicycle in the past and it was not for “Go Green” initiative but their parents don’t have enough money so they don’t have another option.

So, these people don’t consider themselves responsible for current level of Green House Gases.

So, what is the solution , is it responsibility of all the traditional rich people to start riding cycle by giving up their vehicles. It is impossible because they will never, even if they do the problem of Green House Gases emission level of India will not be reduced as percentage of rich people in India is not big.

Then how to get middle class Indian which is the major chunk who can bring GHG emission down into this initiative.

As, in a recent global survey it has come that the greatest potential impact on GHG emissions by increasing energy conservation and efficiency. Indian middle class would be more comfortable on efficiency rather than conservation.

And most of this efficiency benefit can be extracted if the workplace is made more efficient because here major consumption goes. So, most of this workplace is automated nowadays as everyone is trying to be efficient. But where they go wrong is that they install energy efficient equipment and think their work is over .But they forget the basic step to efficiency i.e. Measure->Control->Monitor->Analyze->Efficiency.

Most of the industry and even the big offices in India only install energy efficient equipment but never set up a system for other four steps i.e. measure, control, monitor and analyze to actually become really efficient or we can say measurable efficient e.g. no body use Building Automation system, everyone will only automate building.

It may be bit costly in beginning but overall return is higher and at least this much rich Indians can do , when we have technology there we should leverage that for our benefit.

The benefits of this is not only to the firm to know how much efficient they are and how they can become more efficient. But it will be also useful for Indian government for giving concrete data on international forum when someone is telling to put ceiling on GHG emission.

It’s true that the time has for all of us to “Go Green” but we have to take initiative keeping Indian people in mind not by following what is happening somewhere else in world. So, I request all the big companies to take this initiative and help India to really become green .
