editricon The menace called TV

The TV or Television happens to be the most useful invention of science. It plays a significant role in bringing the world near, news & views are shared across the globe in no time, events, happenings etc could be telecasted anywhere and everywhere. There could be countless such merits of TV, which could be discussed at this juncture, but hang on! The positive aspects of TV is not our concern, rather would like to draw our reader’s attention towards the ill effects of TV and more precisely the various channels airing filthy stuffs to our Gen X.

Click any channel in your TV set and what you discover is the obscene, vulgar ladies with revealing attires, hardly allow any sensible person to withstand for a minute. Besides these, there are many serials which are telecasted every now and then, promoting deception, selfishness, fraud, moral bankruptcy and many more such evils which hamper our society. They reflect disrespect to elders declining the conscience, inculcating vulgar and absurd philosophies, which has been instrumental in plaguing our society. There is hardly any serial, which is made with an intention to promote moral values.

The inside story

Let’s have a look at the home of a middleclass family having 4-6 family members having 50% ladies in it. So starting with my own near ones, I find them indulging in serials especially the ones which start with the alphabet K. These are the ones with certain peculiarity, their stories never end, they have a unique Masala every week which keeps twisting and turning for long. When enquiring the reason of watching them, the instant reply comes, that they really learn a lot from such serial, one can wonder what the serial enthusiasts get from these filthy programmes. During my random survey of 40 families on this issue, I was shocked to discover that how our ladies adjust their daily chores as per the serial timings, someone said, “because we really can’t miss the link of which we are so accustomed to” on questioning how about if you all miss any episode, the answer comes immediately with a grin, “ firstly it’s a seldom affair, but if it happens, then we do manage to watch its repeat telecast or takes the updates from the neighbors etc.”

Gosh! See the commitment! While other people feel that watching TV could squeeze the stress they get during the day, hence they relieve their fatigues etc by watching such stuff in the name of entertainment & time pass. So you see, this was the story of majority of the families surveyed by me, there were some sensible souls too but of course they could be counted on our hand, which includes Mr. Salahuddin a network engineer, who feels, “I can’t afford losing my children & wife by such vague and weird serials, instead I have provided them with a computer where they learn and grow. However, I have TV with cable but they seldom watch such stuff”. Mr. Robin Kumar a lawyer says, “Although there are certain channels which have good content to watch, which is useful and informative, but I can’t let my family go astray”. Miss Pooja an IT professional opines, “Instead of wasting time with the idiot box I love to spend time with books where I can learn and groom myself”.

Reality bites

To wreck more havoc, reality shows have left no stone unturned to glorify the evils of the society. Results are decided over the number of polls you secure, where talent doesn’t matter much, all you require is good luck and a sound resilience power to digest the sarcastic remarks posed by the judges. But now things in the idiot box have moved from bad to worse by the reality show called Rakhi Sawant Swamwar telecasted daily, where a serious institution like marriage is vilified in the very presence of the so called educated and rich. The show where a person called Rakhi Sawant, known for all wrong reasons, has embarked in front of camera for a bridegroom hunt. Her prospective grooms accomplished n number of tasks, which had anything to do with the values practiced in married life. And the worst part was her past relations etc. were discussed in the most vociferous and shameless fashion. And eventually she got one NRI – by choosing him she played a safe game, he is rich, he is simple, and of course an NRI, and above all he won’t mind being a Joru ka Gulam for a person who doesn’t know what family and its values are, and she can dictate her terms to him easily, and this poor little fame hungry hunk has nothing but to participate in such reality shows to finally get a person like her.

If no TV, then what ?

The answer is simple, just look around, find some constructive activities wherein we play a key role in making this society a better place to live. Some activity where we can educate people the ill effects of being environment hostile, where we yield our time with people and NGOs.. engage in some good and worthy projects and the list goes on. By doing so, we cannot only secure our future but also give direction to our coming generation. So life is ours, make it or mar it.
