HONOUR KILLING
Khap Panchayats or village panchayats in some parts of our country dispense instant justice in case of love affairs. The village elders hear the case of those lovers and if they find it not acceptable deliver their verdict far swifter than even Shariat. They order killing of those lovers if they decide to marry,or had already eloped with an intention to marry if they belong to same gotra. This the panchayat maintains is to safeguard the honor of the families concerned. usually the blood relatives of the bride or groom do the task of redeeming family honor by killing either or both of them as the panchayt ordained. There were some politicians which included Congress CM of Haryana Mr Bhupinder singh Hooda who felt that Khap Panchayats are alright. This is in a country where article 14 has ordained equal rights and opportunities to all its citizens regardless of caste, religion, language or any other such distinct identity. Human right activists took cudgels at the phenomenal inaction of the Government who was a mute spectator when honor killing takes place all around us. The Union Cabinet confabulated to bring forward a comprehensive legislation to deter such attempts atleast in future. Well as expected, even learned people like Kamal Nath, Gill and Kapil sibal wondered if it is necessary to enact such a law at all. There was no unanimity and our PM found a convenient way of skirting the larger issue by referring this issue to a Group of Ministers yet again to buy some more time.
One Mr Anjaneyalu had taken pains to explain the humbug called intra caste marriages and those between people of same gothra. He has in a well written article in The Hindu has disproved the age old beliefs claiming non existent scientific evidence to bar such marriages. In olden days, to preserve family property and prevent it falling in the hands of others, people used to adopt boys/ Girls to their gothra to circumvent marriage of the same gothra. Any civilised Government can not be mute spectator to this barbaric practice of honor killings. It is time that UPA wakes up from slumber and bring forward a legislation soon in the monsoon session of Parliament itself and end this practice. Will Dr Singh pick up courage and do it?
