REMEMBERING RAO

The Hindu published a photo of our Prime Minister paying floral tributes to his mentor and our former PM Sri Rao in his birth anniversary. The man who liberalised our economy, the man who brought our present Prime Minister from his retirement to politics to manage our economy, the man who unshackled the Congress party from Nehru clan even if for a brief while, the man who first completed a full term from out side the Nehru family, the man who had the guts to tell newsmen that the unfinished agenda in Kashmir is taking back PoK, the man who provided leadership to the party at its worst hour of crisis, the man who was considered to be a successor to Smt Indira Gandhi by herself, the man who could prevent the Sadhus from an earlier attempt for karseva with his mischievous charms, is a forgotten hero today. There were attempts to marginalise this man for when his family wanted a memorial to be built in the capital, it was refused while every other Prime minister including Chandrasekar were cremated on the banks of Jamna. Atleast Dr.Singh was courteous enough to acknowledge his contribution while Sonia and her family brought disgrace in not observing his memory.

Mr.Rao probably paid the price for keeping 10 Janpath out of crucial political decisions during his tenure. But for the Babri Masjid demolition, I bet he is the best ever Prime Minister we have had for a long time. Even in Babri Masjid case, he deserved a benefit of doubt for he had claimed in his auto biography that he was duped by BJP and Kalyan singh. Nevertheless he was equally cunning because, he never took chances so that some one from the party could undermine his authority. In the Tirupathy session when he ordered elections to CWC most of his rivals got elected with thumping majority. Rao commented wrily on the inadequate representation of minorities and women prompting his chamchas like Jitendra Prasad and RK Dhawan to offers to quit forcing others also to quit authorising him to nominte members to CWC. Rao played the Bofors card very well so that Sonia never thought of upsetting him despite provocations from her camp followers like now marginalised Arjun Singh.

Rao had the guts to face the no confidence motion heading a minority government and managed a majority by splitting JMM for which he was to be convicted later. Taking a cue from his book his follower did the same thing when he took the bull by its horns and proving his majority when left withdrew support, This time press was sympathetic despite large scale machinations and bribing.

It is another matter the entire media ignored the telugu bidda who made our nation proud when he was Prime minister.

I join those Desh Bakhts in remembering this illustrious son of India.
